June 28th, 2007 : Poll Time; Please Respond

Category: Site |

As you can see, I haven’t updated in 20 days. With the exception of revamps and when my mom died, that hasn’t ever happened before. I could use the school excuse, which would be partially accurate (this summer is the first time school has ever effected my online time) but the other half is just a lack. A lack of everything.

To be honest, I don’t know where to go from here. I love my site and I have fun working on it. I have for the past 4.5 years. I’ve spent a vast majority of my time in those years working on this site and expanding it. But I’ve hit a wall and I don’t know what is needed to climb it. The site started with poems then expanded to stories. I added art when I got my scanner. Then added all of the digital arts. More recently designs and tutorials. A few months ago I added languages but that hasn’t really gotten off the ground for whatever reason.

For twenty days I haven’t been able to figure out what to do. Since my dudeperson is out of ideas, I decided to ask you. What do you want? It’s that simple but that hard at the same time. Since it isn’t that easy to sum up, I’ll ask some questions. Please answer any or all of them and feel free to be honest. Constructive criticism will help SF grow. And since some people need motivation, everyone who responds will be plugged.

I’ll answer some…Just first, I’d like to say that Skye, don’t give up!! I love this site, even though I’ve only recently come out into the open about it. Your designs are great and all the chances you give to others are extremely helpful. Hehee…now I guess I’ll answer.

What do you love?: The variety of different medias presented, and the lovely look of the place.
What are your favorite sections?: Layouts, blends
Have you wanted to contribute but never have? Why?: I dunno! XD I guess I was a bit timid to actually put stuff up, since I’m not very good at coding anymore and all the stuff I do are layouts waiting to be coded. Plus I’m new to the community and have yet to distinguish myself.
What sections?: Poems, Stories, Blends, Layouts
If I added more interactivity, would it make the site better?: It would be nice, getting to know everyone and just talking.
Would you sign up for an account?: Of course!
Would you participate in the tutorial discussions?: Yes, I need some help XD
If I added a random chat “forum,” would you participate?: Yes!!

Good luck with your revitalizing, I’m pulling for ya!

You know I wish you all the best, don’t you? So I will speak my mind.
I think you’re obsessing with “projects” too much, instead of the little things. I think you should stand back from upgrading the web site structure, and invest more time into creating content - because that’s what you enjoy, right? I suppose you’d like to draw more, write more, make more blends, design more layouts, if you only had more time. Then take the time. Don’t worry about the web site, it’s huge and a new visitor could easily spend hours on it, while your old visitors would like - new content. Sure, some visitors may like more features, but they are not necessary.

- If I added more interactivity, would it make the site better?
To me, not - perhaps other people would like to post comments and discuss art techniques, but my needs for community interaction are already fulfilled.

- Would you sign up for an account?
If I didn’t know you I probably wouldn’t. Since you’re a friend I’d do it to support your site.

- Would you participate in the tutorial discussions?
Perhaps, if something caught my eye.

- If I added a random chat “forum,” would you participate?
No. I was trying to be active at Morrowindl, but I don’t want to join any more forums.

- What do you want?
You to be content :) And I suppose you’ll never be completely content, that’s what keeps pushing you forward.

I think that your site is great NOW but if you need improve maybe I say a word.

If you had a message board I would probably join. I like message boards and a lot of people too. Since I hate interactions like MSN (or whatever it’s called) and other “chatting” programs I used to be active on forums.

I think my favorite section are stories. I love reading and finding pearls. I write a lot also (in Polish section)

I have one idea. You have blends here. I am not making blends but I make a lot of movie and TV show wallpapers. Maybe wallpapers section. I would love that!!

Take care, Skye!

And oh, I forgot to say. I am always for interaction. More interaction will catch eyes of new people who just visited your site. I had many websites in the past and make it more interactive made them - in opinion of others - better.

First of all, I have loved SF from the very first time I came upon the site and even now that my site is linked to its name. I don’t really find anything I hate. I love everything about it. The thought that many people join and submit their works and entrust their works with you is already amazing, since I know that if I did the same thing, no one would be interested in joining mine. As far as I can see it, many people are already part of the site and the site is also growing because of numerous people adoring and joining your site.
I dunno if you remembered this:

Trisha: i started [coding] when i was 13 because of our computer class, but i got so much interested, i wanted to know more about coding and designing.
Trisha: then i came upon your site and i decided to do my own site. :)
Skye: really?
Trisha: i started blogging and whenever i’d download a new layout for my blog, i’d check the codes and play with them a bit.
Skye: hehe. you’re learning like i did
Skye: XP
Trisha: the first layout i saw of yours was the one with the girl with a fairy tale book.
Skye: hehe. you probably recognize her on this new layout then haha!
Trisha: yep. :)
Trisha: heheh
Skye: im glad my site helped :) its nice to hear that.

Just seeing your site made me inspired to make more of my traditional art and submit them over here. And it’s because of your site that I became so obsessed about learning more about the craft of web design.

Even if you didn’t put much of interactivity in the site, I know you can pull things off since you’re very approachable and all. Well, I don’t really have anything bad to say. But I do want to tell you that don’t lose hope because your truest friends will always be around to support you, whether on line or offline. Remember that. ~.0

What do you hate about SF?
Theres nothing I hate/dislike about SF.

What do you love?
Not only is there art for visitors to see, submitted by visitors, you also offer resources like layouts and tutorials.

What are your favorite sections?
My favorites are the photography and stories.

Do you contribute?
I did contribute once.

What sections?
A blend and a colorization.
Why?
Because I wanted to! Ever since I first came here, but I never thought my art was good enough.

Have you wanted to contribute but never have?
Yes when I first came here, about a year or more ago. Only because I knew my art wasn’t up to par then.
What sections?
I was interested in the layouts actually.

What could be improved?
I agree with Nelchee on this. I see that your always trying to add things and improve, Skyefairy, in my eyes, is already perfect!

If I added more sections, which would you want?
I really can’t think of any other sections I would like or join. You have it all!

Do you like the language sections?
I think it was a great idea. I don’t use them since all I can understand is english.
Do you speak another language?
no

If yes, is your language here?
Well, I said no in the previous question but I’m looking to learn Italian. Its what my Mom speaks and I never got on to it.

If I added more interactivity, would it make the site better?
I don’t think so. The sites great, I don’t think its needed.

Would you sign up for an account?
I’m not sure, I’m not into the chatting stuff.

Would you participate in the tutorial discussions?
If I knew what they are talking about…yeah I think I would.

If I added a random chat “forum,” would you participate?
Most likely no, I don’t really enjoy them.

What do you want?
Like I said, Skyefairy is perfect for me. I just want the site to continue being awesome. :D

What separates Skyefairy from other similar sites is that it’s not a big mess of users. As far as I know, if you’re going to make something interactive, you have to make it so that you don’t have random users that are there without really contributing.

I haven’t yet contributed, but plan on entering the current contest. I’ll probably submit a few things if I ever close my personal site.

There aren’t any problems with anything here, just that for the stories, the chapters shouldn’t be separated as separate stories.

Hey Skye ^^ Im in Japan right now and I have to leave soon so I don’t really have time to do your poll.. I just wanted to give you some consolance..
You’ve already had Skyefairy for 4.5+ years so I know you’re a patient woman =) You just added the languages and people really aren’t going to find the site right away, so I think you should give it some time. Since the site is partially run by the people (as in, submissions), you can’t really force it to grow and you shouldn’t get hung up over it.
I think something that would make it a lot more interesting is if you allowed people to have accounts and submit things that way, but I don’t know if that’s something you wanted to do.
Good luck and I hope to talk to you soon! ^^ (really weird time difference lol)

Note from Skye: My responses are in italics

Now, now, don’t worry about inactivity, and something to do with the site. You should take a step back and breathe. Good things shouldn’t be forced, and I think if you give it a little time, everything will flow like water. I understand your plans of developing SF, and I think they are wonderful. I think it would add an advantage to SF when compared to other sites. But at the same time, there isn’t another site like this one. Just hang in there, Skye. You’ve worked this hard to get SF this far, and your hard work is paying off! If YOU don’t see it now, then it will. I know it is.

I guess my outlook has always been to grow and expand the site. I like to see when sites grow and I’ve always seen it as growth in both the site and their skills rather than content size. That has carried over to SF and I always try to make each thing I create better than the last and add more features. I can see your point in relaxing but the obsession/passion kicks in. XP

I agree with Nelchee on you creating more content. Your site is in its developing stages, and what helps it grow is content. Remember, the people who comes to SF, loves it; they want to see new content. You have already set the stage (the layout) and why not just fill it up. I personally enjoy coming here, not because you are my friend, but I love SF. I love seeing it grow. I love the content you put up. I love seeing new surprises, such as a kick butt layout! So, I think for this period of time, stop thinking of plans for SF (I mean stop and just push it aside somewhere close so you can come back to it), and work on those submissions. As content starts to flow in, perhaps, it will help you in better trying to figure the next step of SF.

I do have a lot of content plans as well. For art, I have some small (8.5×11) drawings I want to do as well as two big (16×20) drawings that I need to do (one 4 hours in and one not started). For layouts, I want to make some of my older SF layouts into premades (”Time of Faerie” being the main one) as well as some I’ve started and haven’t finished. For each version of SF, I make about 10 possible layouts so I have a lot of unfinished ones that I like but weren’t right for SF that I want to finish and make into premades as well as finishing some others. For tutorials, I have a 3-part one I’m planning. So I have plans for that too… XP

You should do what you enjoy and enjoy it as you are doing it.

Oh yeah, have you ever considered a Photo Manipulation section by itself? To me, blends and photo manipulations are two separate and different things. Tee hee. Just saying. And you know, I would contribute to that.

It actually used to be separate but the blends section was teeny and the photomanip section was teenier so I combined them. So, possibly re-differentiating them?

As for adding new sections, if there are certain ones you want to put up and isn’t sure if it’s going to work, you should put it up anyways and test it out. Allotted a certain amount of time for it to take effect. If it doesn’t work out, then take it off. That should go for anything you want to try out on the visitors of SF. You should just put it up, introduce it, but don’t say that you are testing out something (that would either take interest away or people are just going to it because you are TESTING out something), and see how the public responds to it.

Maybe that’s the problem with the languages. I did say that I was just testing them out. I mean. If someone submitted something and it was accepted in that other language and the languages were taken off, I wouldn’t remove it from the site. It would just merge with the English. They haven’t been a success so far but I really want them to be. Patience is key, I guess. For other new sections, I’m not sure. I’ve gotten requests for adding a wallpaper section but if you think about it, anything in wallpapers could fit elsewhere. In fact, many of the blends and vectors on this site were originally wallpapers and just submitted as their media. So I’m not sure how I would add it without an overlap.

Some ideas I can throw in: different categories in each graphically inclined sections (i.e. still life, portraits, landscape, etc); different categories in the writing-involved sections (i.e. romance, action, adventure, etc). Ah, short on time. I’ll talk to you later!

I’ve been debating on adding keywords but I’d have to learn how to make a search function. I already have the categories but they aren’t as detailed as I’d like. I wonder if anyone actually uses them… (I don’t)

Remember, no obsession! Passion!
