January 29th, 2007 : Chit-Chat and Feedback

Category: Uncategorized | 17 believed/comments

Just letting you know ahead of time: there are no updates in this post. Mainly I’ve been thinking more about some plans that have been formulating for a while and I want feedback, so think of this as a discussion. Any and all comments and thoughts are welcomed and highly appreciated.

I just got back from my mini-vacation, am very tired, and still semi-sick (I’m in the hacking cough/trouble breathing part). I have a lot of submissions to process but I got back late so that’ll be put off until Friday (classes tues; study wed; classes, two tests, and an essay thurs). So that is my explanation/excuse. But on to the real reason for this…

I like kids. My goal is to be a first grade teacher and I’m also planning on 2-6 kids (prolly more towards two). And I also like all things creative: art, writing, drawing, web design, music, etc. Everyone has their pet cause and mine is getting kids involved in creating. Imagination goes a long way. (Plug: Rock the Arts). Anyways, for about a year I’ve been trying to figure out how I can do something. I’ve considered a whole range of options but none seem to be something that would work. I want to do more than put up a “Donate” button but at the same time I am just a college student without a whole lot of time or funds available.

I don’t want any of this to be a detriment to SF but, if possible, I’d like to somehow incorporate whatever I do into it since it has a similar goal. My main idea that seems the most viable is to make a Kids version of SF that would focus on posting kid art, writing, etc. to encourage their participation in the arts. Possibly have contests. And, if it expands and I have the resources: make it something bigger. But there are a lot of things in the way. For example: a) how do I do this while still keeping in mind the age I’m aiming at (their access to the internet/my site, parental permission, etc.) b) how do I promote it and get it going? c) where is the line to be drawn? Many of the contributors to SF are younger in age; I don’t ask for age but I know at least a few are/were between 12 and 15 when submitting. 12-ish seems to be the youngest age in our “community” and the base age for this sort of internet browsing. So how do I do it? Aim more for the parents by promoting on sites the parents would visit in a way that would get them to think “hey! I should get my daughter/son to do that!”

And then, the bottom line: would it work and is it worth it?

Much of this would HAVE to be interactive. If any of you have any suggestions and thoughts at all, please let me know. I’ll respond to everything in the comments so hopefully through conversation we can think of a plan that will work. And, if anybody is interested, willing, and able to help with this when we get a game plan, please let me know as well.

Note: All further information on the progression of this brainstorm will be in the comments. Refer there for developments.

January 2nd, 2007 : Quick Note

Category: Uncategorized | 5 believed/comments

Quick note to let everyone know I’m here. I’ve been very very very very busy but thinks should hopefully slow down in a day or so. I just waded through hosting applications, responding and setting up accounts. Hosting is now closed until I have time to deal with them; I hate having applications sit and rot in my inbox as it isn’t fair to either of us. On another note, I plan to do a hostee check as soon as possible to clean out old ones that are dead and such so this is your warning.

I have many submissions to process as well. I have plans for a new layout though, by the time it is done, this one will be old. >.< I also want to database the fairy ring links out, adding many links and such. I want to database the hostees. I have plans for both of those sections.

Sorry for not plugging the song indentifier person from the last update; I’ll do that next time. In a rush…. :(
