April 23rd, 2008 : Afterlife by Miriam

Afterlife: Chapter 1 (rated T) by Miriam was the 1000th submission to the site. Since it is one part of an ongoing story she is writing, I thought that I would interview her about the story for her feature.

What is your Afterlife story about?
Its about a girl called Carrie who has commited suicide after a miserable life full of suffering. She just wants peace and to be left alone in death. That is why she is surprised when she wakes up a the ‘Exit journey Express’ Train, which is taking her to heaven. The story will mainly focus on what this ‘heaven’ is like and what she does there.

What does it mean to you?/What do you hope readers get from it?
It means alot to me because its a serious topic and people will be saddened by the story and (I hope also) inspired to ‘live life’ while you can - dead or alive. I hope people will understand that suffering happens everywhere, all the time but that we can overcome it. I also want readers to enjoy it and be inspired to write and read.

Where did you get the idea for it?
I have just finished reading ‘Elsewhere’ by Gabrielle Zevin for the third time, and only this time have I been inspired to write about the topic of heaven. Heaven seems so amazing because anything could happen, so why not write about it. In the Elsewhere book, its very different - famous writers like shakespeare create new pieces of work, people get younger, people can view life on earth through binoculars, and much more - so I knew I had alot of things to write about. The book is amazing and really gave me the idea of writing about death and heaven - especially about a girl who chose to die willingly.

Is it purely fiction or have you known anyone you base Carrie on?
It is all fiction - I don’t know anyone like Carrie, and I didn’t base her on anyone. Her characteristics may have come from various friends, but her actions and feelings are purely fiction - even though suicide occurs alot in real life.

Anything you else you want to tell about it :)
Not much - but do try and get hold of a copy of ‘Elsewhere’ by Gabrielle Zevin; its an amazing book and is such a great read. Also, give my story a try - more will be coming soon - but remember it is rated as ‘Teenage’. Thanks so much for interviewing me - and I’m so happy my submission is #1000 - GO SKYEFAIRY!
