I know that it’s about 3 months early but last year’s timing didn’t work well for everyone’s schedule so I’m trying it out different this year
I believe that developing creativity and imagination can help in so many ways with day-to-day life as well as with life as a whole. When it comes to my own creating (drawing, writing, etc.), having a schedule or a deadline helps especially if made fun. Likewise, I created this contest.
This year’s theme is inverted fairy tales. Last years was pretty all encompasing and if it related at all, it worked. This year requires a little more thought. Think of your favorite childhood tales, whether they be Disney or Grimms (or Perault, Anderson, etc.). There are many books published on the “hidden” meanings behind them and why they’ve lasted so long. Supposedly, kids have many subconscious thoughts roaming around in their heads and the fairy tales help them make sense of these things. Some have looked into these hidden meanings and seen stories with far more depth and social meaning. Others have taken these new tales and, comparing them to the old, seen the tales in a new light.
That’s what this year’s contest is about: taking an old fairy tale that is well known and seing it from a different perspective.
For example, think of Snow White. Neil Gaiman wrote a short story—Snow, Glass, Apples—from the perspective of the stepmother, using certain clues from the old Grimm version of the tale to support a different view: that Snow White was a vampire. (Note: Story is not kid friendly; read at your own risk).
So, take one of the following tales and create a piece reflecting the story from a different perspective. It doesn’t have to be dark like Gaiman’s.
Sections:
A section needs at least 5 finalists to continue onto judging.
Depending on the number of finalists per section determines the numbers of winners.
If there are at least 5 finalists, there will be one winner.
If there are at least 10 finalists, there will be two winners.
If there are at least 20 finalists, there will be three winners.
Normal submission rules apply. Please also include in the comments section of the form the reasoning behind your perspective: what from the original stories supports your perspective, how you came up with it, etc.
No link back is required but, if you wish to link to the contest, please link to this update:
Entries can be something you’ve already made if it relates to the theme, but nothing already on the site.

*** Judges are allowed to enter. However, they cannot rate their own entry/ies. Because of the averaged score, this will even out. They will be allowed to rate other entries in categories they enter but if any oddity in scores occurs, their votes will be discounted. I will only appoint a judge if I trust them.

WOW!! This contest looks awesome, I wanna join. Though I have to figure out how I’m gonna work around fairy tales.
Sweet! I totally think I’m going to do this. In fact, I’m just about to start my next piece in art class, so I think I’ll fit it into this category somehow. By the way, I’m starting to get on MSN more often because my old friend is MAKING me, so I promise I’ll talk to you more often =P I’d love to be a judge too if you need me, hehe.
awww, the new design is beautiful!
this contest is perfect since I have a picture in my mind for so long, but I’ve been putting it off… it’s not kid friendly though, I hope I’ll still be able to enter the contest.
Response: Thanks
Non-kidfriendly is fine. I’m going to start allowing it and just implement a rating system.
Wow, what cool idea! I would like to be a judge!
Hey Skye! I know I’m kinda late, but love the new layout! The colours are very sophisticated, I love the deep purpley-blue. I actually like this setup a lot more than the old one with the huge footer; it’s just much cleaner now. And the contest sound awesome, I’ll try to think of something to get in ![]()

This sounds so fun! I’m looking forward to the entries. Can’t join because it’s my busy time of the year. ![]()
Actually, the timing here doesn’t work for those of us in school. Last year, those of us who were in school got to write stuff after the final exams in May/June. Anyways, I’ll try to come up with something as well this year. I LOVE the topic though.
Hey there Skye, this contest looks really cool! I’d love to enter. Hopefully I’ll be able to squeeze in some times for it. I’d also like to help judge since I’m not quite sure I’ll make it to the deadline if that’s okay with you.
